About the studio<\/h1>\n\n\n

Alfama Ceramic Studio is a two-person pottery on Cal\u00e7ada do Forte, a side street below S\u00e3o Jorge Castle that smells of wet clay and espresso. We make stoneware the slow way, in small batches, for people who use their dishes every day.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Two potters, one wheel at a time<\/h2>\n\n\n

Marta learned to throw in \u00c9vora and spent a decade in production potteries before opening the studio with Duarte, a former carpenter who now mixes every glaze we use. Between us we throw, trim, glaze, fire and pack every piece that leaves the door.<\/p>\n\n\n

We use Portuguese stoneware clay from the Aveiro region and fire to 1,260 \u00b0C, which makes pots that survive dishwashers, ovens and daily use. What we do not outsource: the glazes, the handles or the packing.<\/p>\n\n\n

  • Local materials.<\/strong> Clay and minerals sourced within Portugal, glazes mixed in-studio.<\/li>\n\n\n

    From lump to shelf<\/h2>\n\n\n

    Each piece takes about three weeks from wet clay to the studio shop. The pauses are part of the process.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n

    02 \/ Dry<\/p>\n\n\n

    Let the clay settle<\/h3>\n\n\n

    Pieces dry slowly on open shelves before trimming, handle-making and their first firing.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/article>\n\n\n
